On May 12, 2014; after one month of his release, NISS re-arrested Mohamed Salah, a political and civil rights activist and post graduate student at the University of Khartoum, Aged 24 years; he was kidnapped from Nile Street, near the University of Khartoum. According to friends and eye witnesses, Mohamed felt he was under surveillance inside the university campus, he took a car with two other friends and tried to find a secure place, the car was stopped few meters from the university by a group of plain clothed armed men who introduced themselves as NISS personnel.
In the same day another two university students were arrested; Taj Alsir Jaafer and Muamer Musa.
After a week of inquiries, NISS confirmed Mohamed’s detention to the family, and allowed delivering clean clothes and some food items for him. According to the national security law, the family is entitled a visit after two weeks of the arrest, accordingly they submitted the first request on May 26th, the request was rejected without explanation, and were asked to re-submit the request three days later, and again it was rejected. A fourth one was submitted and also rejected.
the family was allowed a visit after 32 days of his detention in Kober prison in Bahri, Khartoum, at 11 am on June 14th, 2014. The visit lasted in 25 minutes, one NISS personnel attended the visit and censored the conversation, including preventing the family from knowing his whereabouts; however, Mohamed managed to tell them that he is kept in a small cell at NISS’s premises in Bahri, the same location Mohamed was kept in before in March – April, 2014, the cells are known as “the fridges”, an intentionally very cold place as a form of inhumane treatment.
Mohamed’s clothes were hewed, though the clothes we delivered few weeks ago were all new. Family noticed beneath the his clothes that his legs were wrapped by something that couldn’t be sure whether its plaster or gauze, further noticed that he can’t walk properly and he informed us that he lost his ability to walk for many days.
Moreover, there were clear signs of injuries in his forehead and all over his face and the unveiled parts of his hands. He was not wearing his permanent eye glasses and his eyes were bloody red, he told the family that he lost sight of his right eye for weeks, and he can now feel the light through but still can’t see.
Mohamed also said that he was kept blindfolded during the interrogation, and five NISS personnel have constantly bitten him all over his body including his face and eyes for hours.
Mohamed was detained for three weeks in March-April 2014, and for 50 days in June-July 2012, in both detentions Mohamed was tortured, however, the family is certain that the level and methods of inhumane treatment and torture during this detention are far more severe than the previous detentions, the signs in his body and what he managed to tell us are the main evidence.
Mohamed’s life is indeed in danger, as in addition to what he is facing currently, he has critical kidney disease, and as a result of the torture in 2012, Mohamed suffers from occasional back pain.
We call upon all Activists, UN-OHCHR, the international human rights groups and all the social and political actors to press the Sudanese government to immediately release Mohamed Salah and all political detainees specially Student of UoK, and enable him access to safe and professional physical and psychological treatment.
